1. Thermal Decomposition
Just as water boils and turns into steam at 100°C, oxalic acid decomposes when heated. When heated to a specific temperature, its molecular structure begins to break down, much like a formation of soldiers being scattered. Oxalic acid crystals first melt upon heating, then start to decompose. Generally, oxalic acid begins to decompose at around 189.5°C—this temperature acts as a “trigger,” initiating the breakdown process. At this point, it decomposes into carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and water, as if a whole object is split into smaller, separate components.
