General Properties of Alcohol

General Properties of Alcohol
Alcohol is a colorless, transparent, volatile, flammable, and non-conductive liquid. It has a wine-like aroma, a pungent and spicy taste, and a slightly sweet aftertaste. Its scientific name is ethanol, with the molecular formula C₂H₅OH. It is called “alcohol” because its molecular structure contains a hydroxyl group (-OH).
Freezing point: ~-114°C
Boiling point: 78.3°C
It can mix with water, ether, chloroform, and other organic solvents in any ratio and is hygroscopic, forming azeotropic mixtures with water.
Ethanol vapor can form explosive mixtures with air, with an explosion limit in air.
At a concentration of 70% (v/v), alcohol has a strong bactericidal effect and can also be used as a preservative and solvent.
In a supercritical state (243°C, 60 kg/cm²), ethanol exhibits extremely strong solvency, enabling supercritical fluid extraction.
Due to its low freezing point, alcohol solutions of a certain concentration can be used as antifreeze and refrigerants.
Ethanol can replace gasoline as a fuel, making it a renewable energy source.
