An Overview of Bisphenol A BPA
Initially produced in 1936 as a synthetic estrogen, bisphenol A (BPA) is now manufactured at an annual volume exceeding 6 billion pounds. Bisphenol A BPA is most commonly used as a building block for polycarbonate plastics, which are found in products such as baby bottles, water bottles, epoxy resins (coatings lining food containers), and white dental sealants. It is also used as an additive in other types of plastics for manufacturing children’s toys.
Bisphenol A BPA molecules form polymers through “ester bonds” to create polycarbonate plastics. As a key component of polycarbonate, BPA is the primary chemical constituent in this type of plastic.
