Product Overview of Oxalic Acid
Oxalic acid, also known as ethanedioic acid, is the simplest dicarboxylic acid with the molecular formula (COOH) 2 ⋅2H2O
It appears as colorless columnar crystals and is a common component in herbaceous plants, mostly existing in the form of potassium or calcium salts, while it is found as free acid in plants such as Chinese crabapple and banana. A small amount of oxalic acid is also present in human urine, and calcium oxalate is the main component of urinary tract stones. When heated to 100.1 °C, oxalic acid crystals lose their water of crystallization to form anhydrous oxalic acid, which has a melting point of 189.5 °C. Anhydrous oxalic acid is soluble in water or ethanol but insoluble in ether. In the laboratory, oxalic acid can be thermally decomposed to produce carbon monoxide gas.
