Propionic Acid Gas Chromatography (GC)
This is a very common and effective method for detecting propionic acid. First, ensure the gas chromatograph is properly calibrated with correct parameters. Use a suitable column, such as a capillary column, which offers good separation for propionic acid. Taking the analysis of propionic acid in food as an example, the pre-treated food sample is injected into the gas chromatograph inlet. The sample is vaporized in the injection port and carried by a high-purity carrier gas (usually nitrogen) into the column. High-purity carrier gas is essential for detection accuracy. Inside the column, propionic acid is separated from other impurities based on differences in their partition coefficients between the stationary and mobile phases. Different compounds elute from the column at different times and reach the detector. A commonly used detector is the flame ionization detector (FID), which is highly sensitive to carbon-containing organic compounds. When propionic acid reaches the detector, it generates an electrical signal proportional to its concentration. By comparing the resulting chromatogram with that of a known concentration of propionic acid standard analyzed under identical conditions, the propionic acid content in the sample can be accurately calculated based on peak area or peak height.
