Propionic Acid Titration Method
Prepare glassware such as a burette and conical flask. Taking the determination of propionic acid content in industrial propionic acid products as an example, accurately weigh a certain mass of the propionic acid sample and place it in the conical flask. Add an appropriate amount of distilled water to dissolve the sample completely. Then select a suitable indicator, such as phenolphthalein. Titrate with a sodium hydroxide standard solution of known concentration. During the titration, a neutralization reaction occurs between sodium hydroxide and propionic acid. As sodium hydroxide is added, the pH of the solution gradually increases. The titration end point is reached when the solution color changes from colorless to light red and remains unchanged for half a minute. Based on the volume of sodium hydroxide standard solution consumed, the propionic acid content in the sample can be calculated using stoichiometric relationships.
