Alcohol with a volume fraction of over 99.5% is called absolute ethanol. In biology, it is used because pigments in chloroplasts are soluble in organic solvents like absolute ethanol (or acetone), so absolute ethanol can be used to extract these pigments.
95% alcohol is used for wiping UV lamps. This concentration is commonly used in hospitals, while at home it is typically only used for cleaning camera lenses.
70%–75% alcohol is used for disinfection. This is because alcohol with too high a concentration forms a protective layer on the surface of bacteria, preventing it from entering the bacterial cells and making it difficult to completely kill the bacteria. If the alcohol concentration is too low, it can enter the bacteria but cannot coagulate the proteins inside them, nor can it completely kill the bacteria. Among these, 75% alcohol has the best disinfection effect.
40%–50% alcohol can prevent bedsores. For long-term bedridden patients, the back, waist, and buttocks are prone to developing bedsores due to prolonged pressure. Pouring a small amount of 40%–50% alcohol into the hands and massaging the pressure areas evenly can promote local blood circulation and prevent bedsores.
