Physical Properties: Sodium dithionite is classified as a Grade 1 flammable substance. It is also known as Rongalite Commercially, it exists in two forms: Na₂S₂O₄·2H₂O and the anhydrous Na₂S₂O₄. The former is a fine white crystal, while the latter is a light yellow powder. Its relative density is 2.3-2.4. It decomposes when red-hot, soluble in cold water but decomposes in hot water. It is insoluble in ethanol. Its aqueous solution is unstable and has extremely strong reducing properties, classifying it as a strong reducing agent.
When exposed to air, it easily absorbs oxygen and oxidizes. It also readily absorbs moisture, generating heat and deteriorating. It can absorb oxygen from the air, form lumps, and emit a pungent sour odor.
Na₂S₂O₄ + 2H₂O + O₂ → 2NaHSO₄ + 2[H]
Heating or contact with an open flame can cause combustion. Its auto-ignition temperature is 250°C. Contact with water can release a significant amount of heat and flammable hydrogen and hydrogen sulfide gas, leading to violent combustion. Contact with oxidizers, small amounts of water, or absorption of moisture generating heat can cause yellow smoke, combustion, or even explosion.
