Synthetic Resins
Maleic anhydride reacts with polyols (followed by cross-linking with styrene) to form unsaturated polyester resins (UPR), a thermosetting resin. UPR is divided into fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP, commonly known as fiberglass-reinforced plastic) and non-reinforced plastics.
FRP is used in construction (e.g., corrugated sheets, prefabricated houses, pools, bathrooms, wastewater tanks), manufacturing (e.g., ship/automobile exteriors, interior trim, bathtubs, doors/windows, electrical insulation boards), chemical engineering (e.g., pipes, storage tanks, environmental equipment), and consumer goods (e.g., fishing rods, rackets, snowboards, golf clubs, safety helmets).
Non-reinforced UPR is used in polyester concrete, binders, surface coatings (pianos, furniture), buttons, and artificial marble/onyx.
