What role can calcium formate play in animal feed?

Domestic and international market studies show that adding 1% to 3% calcium formate to piglet diets can significantly improve the production performance of weaned piglets. Research found that adding 3% calcium formate to weaned piglet diets increased feed conversion rate by 7% to 8%, and adding 5% reduced piglet diarrhea. Zheng (1994) added 3% calcium formate to the diet of 28-day-old weaned piglets; after 25 days of feeding, the daily weight gain of piglets increased by 7%, feed conversion rate by 7%, protein and energy utilization rates by 7% and 8% respectively, and piglet morbidity decreased significantly. Wu (2002) added 1% calcium formate to the diet of three-way cross weaned piglets, resulting in a 3% increase in daily weight gain, a 9% increase in feed conversion rate, and a 7% decrease in piglet diarrhea rate. It should be noted that calcium formate is effective around weaning, as piglets’ own hydrochloric acid secretion strengthens with age; calcium formate contains 30% easily absorbable calcium, so the calcium-phosphorus ratio should be adjusted when formulating feed.
