Zinc stearate
Zinc stearate is a white, lightweight fine powder. Its molecular formula is Zn(C₁₇H₃₅COO)₂, and its molecular structure is RCOOZnOOCR (where R represents the mixed alkyl groups in industrial stearic acid). It is flammable, with a specific gravity of 1.095, an autoignition temperature of 900°C, a density of 1.095, and a melting point of 130°C. It has a greasy texture.
Zinc Distearate is insoluble in water, ethanol, and ether, but soluble in hot ethanol, turpentine, benzene, and other organic solvents, as well as acids. When Zinc Distearate is heated and dissolved in organic solvents, it turns into a gelatinous substance upon cooling; when it comes into contact with strong acids, it decomposes into stearic acid and the corresponding zinc salt.
Zinc stearate has lubricating properties and hygroscopicity. It is non-toxic, slightly irritating, non-polluting, and poses no hazardous characteristics. By leveraging the property that zinc stearate is soluble in benzene (while calcium stearate is not), the two compounds can be separated.

Uses of Zinc Stearate
Zinc stearate serves as a softening lubricant for rubber products, a glazing agent for textiles, and a stabilizer for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics. Zinc Distearate is also used as a stabilizer in PVC plastic products and a softener in rubber goods. Additionally, Zinc Dioctadecanoate finds applications in the pharmaceutical industry, as well as in the formulation of hydrogenated oils and lubricants, and acts as a drier in paints.
In the processing of non-toxic PVC and rubber products, zinc stearate exhibits a synergistic effect when used in combination with calcium stearate and barium stearate, effectively enhancing the photothermal stability of PVC and rubber products. Its typical dosage in PVC processing is less than 1 part.
Zinc stearate functions as a mold release agent for rubber products, and is also applied as a polymerization additive in PP, PE, PS, and EPS, as well as in the manufacturing of pencil leads—with a general dosage of 1 to 3 parts. Octadecanoic Acid Zinc Salt is used as a stabilizer, lubricant, grease component, accelerator, and thickener, and serves as a dispersant and thermal stabilizer for polyethylene, polystyrene, PVC, and high-end chemical fiber color masterbatches in the petrochemical industry. In color masterbatches (granules), zinc stearate acts as a thermal stabilizer, dispersant, and lubricant.
