Researched and developed the carbon monoxide gas-phase coupling method on the basis of the liquid-phase method. Using Pd/C as a catalyst, at 130 °C and atmospheric pressure, carbon monoxide is coupled with alkyl nitrite to synthesize oxalate, with nitric oxide as a by-product. Oxalic acid and alcohol are obtained by hydrolysis of oxalate:2CO+2RONO=(COOR) 2+2NO
(COOR) 2+2H 2O=2ROH+C 2H 2O 4
After separating oxalic acid, the alcohol solution is converted into alkyl nitrite through the following reaction for recycling:
4NO+4ROH+O 2=4RONO+2H 2O
This method has extremely high selectivity, with a yield of 97%–98%, easily obtainable raw materials, a simple process, continuous production, and high product purity. It not only has low production costs but also can provide cheap raw materials for the synthetic industry that uses ethylene glycol and oxalate as intermediates.
