Similar to the neopentyl glycol route, this method also has two production variants:
The traditional process is the most common, producing low-cost, light yellow sodium formate.
The upgraded version of the traditional process yields whiter, higher-purity sodium formate with greater production capacity.
Trimethylolpropane Process of Sodium Formate
n-Butyraldehyde undergoes an aldol condensation reaction with formaldehyde solution in the presence of an alkaline catalyst to form 2,2-dimethylolbutyraldehyde. This intermediate then reacts with excess formaldehyde under strong alkaline conditions via a crossed Cannizzaro reaction to produce trimethylolpropane. During this reaction, formaldehyde is oxidized to formic acid, which is then neutralized with sodium hydroxide to form sodium formate.
There are many different ways to manufacture sodium formate. It is a non-toxic chemical that poses no harm to human health, though it must be kept dry during transportation. Since sodium formate is not a controlled substance, even if it cakes during normal storage, it remains usable.
