Oxalic Acid Carbohydrate Oxidation Method.

Oxalic Acid Carbohydrate Oxidation Method
This method uses starch and sugars as raw materials and oxidizes them with nitric acid at 73–80 °C to produce oxalic acid. Taking starch as an example, the process is as follows: 85% mass fraction starch is dispersed in an aqueous solution containing 10% oxalic acid or the mother liquor of other intermediate products, heated with acid, and refluxed for 6 hours to first obtain the intermediate product glucose. Then, nitric acid and an iron-vanadium catalyst are added at 63 °C for further hydrolysis, and oxalic acid is obtained through refining after the reaction.
The main reaction is the hydrolysis of starch into glucose, which is then oxidized to oxalic acid with nitric acid in the presence of
Fe 3+ and V2O5V
catalysts. This method features readily available raw materials, simple process, mild operating conditions, and low investment, and countries can choose different raw materials according to their own resource conditions. In terms of yield and economic benefits, corn starch is generally the best choice. However, its disadvantages include low yield, large grain consumption, high production cost, and a large amount of nitrogen oxides in the tail gas, which are highly toxic and cause severe environmental pollution.
