Propionic Acid Infrared (IR) Spectroscopy
Use an infrared spectrometer for detection. Taking the identification of propionic acid and other similar compounds as an example, apply a small amount of propionic acid sample onto a potassium bromide pellet or use the liquid film method to prepare a suitable test sample. Then place the sample in the sample cell of the infrared spectrometer. The infrared spectrometer emits infrared light. When the infrared light irradiates the sample, the sample molecules absorb specific frequencies of infrared light, causing vibrational and rotational energy level transitions. Different chemical bonds absorb different frequencies of infrared light, resulting in characteristic absorption peaks in the infrared spectrum. Propionic acid contains functional groups such as carboxylic acid, which exhibit corresponding characteristic absorption peaks in the infrared spectrum (e.g., the stretching vibration peak of the carboxylic acid group is around 1700 cm⁻¹). By comparing the obtained spectrum with the standard infrared spectrum of known propionic acid, it can be determined whether the sample is propionic acid. A rough estimate of the propionic acid content can also be made based on the intensity of the characteristic peaks, but this method is generally more commonly used for qualitative analysis. info@pulisichem.cn
