3. Methanol Carbonylation Process
Methanol carbonylation is an emerging method for producing propionic acid. Using methanol as the raw material, the reaction takes place in the presence of a catalyst to form a methanol-based carbonyl intermediate system, which is then oxidized to produce propionic acid.
4. Propylene Oxidation Process
1. Raw Material Preparation
The raw materials for propylene oxidation include propylene, air, and water. Propylene is obtained from refineries or cracking plants, while air is sourced from air separation units.
2. Reaction Process
Preheating: Propylene and air are preheated separately to suitable temperatures to ensure the reaction proceeds smoothly.
Catalytic Reaction: The preheated propylene and air are mixed and reacted in the presence of a catalyst. This step occurs under high temperature and pressure conditions, typically at 250–350°C and 1–3 MPa.
Cooling: The reaction product is cooled to room temperature via a cooler for further processing.
3. Separation and Purification
After the reaction, the product contains significant amounts of impurities and unreacted raw materials, requiring separation and purification:
Separation: Water, unreacted propylene, and other impurities are separated from the product using separators.
Purification: The separated propionic acid is purified through distillation, extraction, and other methods to obtain high-purity propionic acid.
