Carbon monoxide (CO) is purified and compressed, then mixed with a caustic soda solution.
A caustic soda solution is prepared by mixing caustic soda with water and recycled centrifugal mother liquor. This solution is pressurized via centrifugal pumps and combined with coal gas.
The gas-liquid mixture enters a tubular reactor, where it reacts under pressure (1.3–2.0 MPa) and temperature (150–190°C) to form a dilute sodium formate solution.
The dilute sodium formate solution flows into a dilute feed storage tank, then is pumped into a sodium formate concentrator. Using double-effect concentration, a concentrated sodium formate suspension containing crystals is obtained.
The suspension is centrifuged in a centrifuge: the mother liquor is recycled, while the solid product is sent to a dryer.
The dried material yields the final sodium formate product.
Sources of CO gas include:
a. Gas produced from coke or coal gasification;
b. Ammonia synthesis purge gas;
c. Calcium carbide tail gas;
d. Yellow phosphorus tail gas;
e. Other CO-containing gases.
