This oxidation process is very similar to the starch oxidation method. An aqueous ethylene glycol solution is heated to 60 °C, and mixed acid (30%–40% sulfuric acid by mass, 20%–25% nitric acid by mass) and vanadium pentoxide are added under vigorous stirring. The oxidation is carried out at 50–70 °C and 1.3–4.0 kPa. The product is cooled, crystallized, and filtered to obtain oxalic acid with a purity of 99.9% and a yield of over 90%. This method can be carried out under three process conditions: atmospheric pressure, reduced pressure, and increased pressure. It has a simple process, high oxalic acid yield, good product quality, and almost complete recovery of nitric acid, but the raw material price is high.
