The chemical properties of oxalic acid solution are mainly reflected in its acidity and reducibility. As a dibasic acid, oxalic acid undergoes two-step dissociation, with a first dissociation constant of approximately

and a second dissociation constant of about

(per the Handbook of Organic Chemistry). Its strong acidity enables it to effectively dissolve metal oxides. In redox reactions, oxalic acid is readily oxidized by strong oxidizing agents such as potassium permanganate to produce carbon dioxide and water, making it commonly used as a reducing agent in analytical chemistry.
The two carboxyl groups in the oxalic acid molecule are located on adjacent carbon atoms, and this special structure gives it excellent coordination ability, allowing it to form stable complexes with metal ions such as iron and aluminum. Notably, calcium oxalate is poorly soluble in water—a property that has important medical significance in the mechanism of kidney stone formation. When heated above 150°C, oxalic acid solution may decompose to produce formic acid, carbon monoxide, and other substances, so high-temperature environments must be avoided during storage.
