Process Description
n-Butyraldehyde undergoes aldol condensation with an aqueous formaldehyde solution in the presence of an alkaline catalyst, forming 2,2-dimethylolbutyraldehyde. This intermediate then reacts with excess formaldehyde under strong alkaline conditions via a crossed Cannizzaro reaction to produce trimethylolpropane. During this reaction, formaldehyde is oxidized to formic acid, which is then neutralized with sodium hydroxide to generate sodium formate.
