(1) Rust Stain Removal from Fabrics
Iron exposed to atmospheric oxygen and moisture forms complex compounds known as rust. While rust composition varies by formation conditions, all rust contains trivalent iron ions (Fe3+). Rust stains on cotton fabrics create unsightly blemishes that must be removed, and oxalic acid is a highly effective agent for this purpose.
Mechanism: Oxalic acid reacts with trivalent iron ions (Fe 3+) to form the soluble anionic complex
[Fe(C2o4)3−, which dissolves in water, allowing rust to be washed away.
Recommended Formula: 20 g/L oxalic acid + ~30 mL/L 98% acetic acid.
Critical Precaution: Oxalic acid can damage fibers. After treatment, cotton fabrics must be thoroughly rinsed to remove residual oxalic acid. If not rinsed properly, the dilute oxalic acid solution will concentrate during fabric drying, severely damaging fibers and causing holes. This warning also applies to nylon fabrics, where oxalic acid is used to remove rust stains that cause yellowing.
