This causes the sodium salt of naphthol AS on the fabric to precipitate as a red-brown substance, resulting in an off-white background. To eliminate nitrous acid, 1–2 g/L of oxalic acid is often added to the sulfuric acid developing solution, replacing other reducing agents (e.g., formic acid, urea, sulfur). Oxalic acid reduces nitrous acid to nitrogen gas, preventing HNO from discoloring AS dyes.
