Commonly known as sodium formate (or formiate), its chemical formula is CHNaO₂ with a relative molecular mass of 68.01. It appears as a white granular or crystalline powder with a slight formic acid odor and hygroscopic properties. At high temperatures, it decomposes into sodium oxalate and hydrogen, which then further decompose into sodium carbonate. It dissolves in about 1.3 parts of water, is soluble in glycerol, and slightly soluble in ethanol. Its aqueous solution is neutral with a pH of 7, and it has a relative density of 1.92 g/cm³, a boiling point of 360°C, and an irritating nature. Commercial products are typically the dihydrate, with a crystallization point of ≥253°C. It must be stored in a sealed, dry environment.
Widely used across industries, it serves as a masking agent in leather tanning and chrome tanning processes, a catalyst and stabilizer in chemical synthesis, a reducing agent in textile dyeing, and a key raw material for producing sodium hydrosulfite, oxalic acid, and formic acid.
